Elle with Yucca
Lessons from the Yucca
One of my favorite things about living in New Mexico is taking evening walks through the desert.
The landscape changes subtly throughout the year, and if you’re paying attention, you start to notice things that most people walk right past. Lately, I’ve found myself looking for two of my favorite signs of summer: the blooming cholla cactus and the towering flower stalks of the yucca.
A few evenings ago, I stopped to admire a yucca that had shot up well over twenty feet into the air. Just weeks before, it looked like every other yucca in the landscape—a cluster of pointed leaves sitting close to the ground. Then suddenly, there it was, reaching toward the sky.
Every year, it catches me by surprise.
The funny thing is, the growth wasn’t sudden at all.
The yucca had been preparing for that moment long before anyone noticed.
All winter and spring, it was storing resources, developing roots, conserving energy, and quietly doing the work it needed to do beneath the surface. Then, when the conditions were right, it produced something remarkable.
I think healing often works the same way.
At ElleWell, we spend a lot of time talking about consistency. Improving nutrition. Getting better sleep. Managing stress. Supporting hormones. Reducing inflammation. Moving your body. Taking supplements. Following through with treatments.
Sometimes patients become discouraged because they don’t see immediate results.
Yucca before bloom
Trust me—I understand.
We live in a world that expects instant gratification. We want to see change tomorrow because of the work we put in today.
But the body doesn’t always work that way.
Often, the most important healing is happening where we can’t see it.
The nervous system is calming down.
Inflammation is slowly decreasing.
Hormones are finding balance.
The gut is repairing itself.
The body is gathering resources.
Then one day, something blooms.
The headaches are gone.
The energy returns.
The pain that felt permanent starts to fade.
The scale finally moves.
The lab work improves.
The breakthrough appears to happen overnight, but it was really the result of weeks or months of effort happening beneath the surface.
The yucca reminds me of this every summer.
We don’t always get to choose when our bloom comes.
We don’t always know how close we are to a breakthrough.
Our job is simply to keep doing the work.
To keep showing up.
To trust the process.
To continue nourishing ourselves even when we can’t yet see the results.
The desert teaches this lesson beautifully. Conditions are often harsh. Water is scarce. Temperatures fluctuate wildly. Yet somehow, life finds a way to thrive.
And when it blooms, it is breathtaking.
The same is true for our health.
At ElleWell, we believe healing isn’t about chasing symptoms. It’s about creating the right conditions for the body to do what it was designed to do.
Like the yucca, your body is remarkably resilient.
Sometimes it just needs the right support, enough time, and a little faith that growth is happening even when you can’t see it.
So the next time you spot a blooming yucca standing tall against a New Mexico sunset, remember this:
Keep doing the work.
Keep gathering your resources.
Keep trusting the process.
Your bloom may be closer than you think.
