Acupuncture is just one therapeutic aspect of a broader study called Oriental Medicine or Eastern Medicine. Various practitioners can integrated traditional acupuncture into their practice including medical physicians, chiropractors, ayurevedic practitioners and doctors or oriental medicine. Acupuncture is useful for a wide range of conditions including musculoskeletal, hormonal, digestive, nervous system and others. It has also shown promise in treating symptoms associated with cancer, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and other chronic conditions.

ElleWell is excited to offer acupuncture and eastern medicine services in conjunction with the other holistic services. Acupuncture is a great treatment to combine integratively with chiropractic, massage, nutrition, exercise and other services offered at ElleWell.

At your first acupuncture visit expect a broad intake that may not necessarily relate to your chief complaint. Practitioners of acupuncture use systems of meridians to diagnose and treat a vast variety of conditions. These meridians relate to eastern medicine concepts and may not be what we are used to in our western medicine culture.

Traditionally acupuncture uses needles to stimulate points on the meridian channels in order to balance the system. In some cases moxibustion (a traditional herb that is burned at the end of the needle) is used to intensify the treatment. But if you have a fear of needles don’t fret. There are other ways to treat meridians including acupressure, on skin moxibustion and herbs.

Walter Eddy, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, is dedicated to bringing health and healing to his patients, with over 20 years of experience in the field. Walter received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from San Diego State University in 1980, and in 1995 received his Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine degree from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego. Walter returned to his native Santa Fe in 2002 and opened his private practice. He is a Clinical Supervisor at Southwest Acupuncture College in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

“My other great love and interest is psychology, and by using psychological therapies such as hypnosis, interactive guided imagery, and neurolinguistic programming in conjunction with traditional acupuncture, I strive to give my patients the best treatment possible. Studying these other modalities has given me an understanding about how the mind works, and how the emotional state of a patient plays a pivotal role in the evolution of disease.”

“It is very gratifying to see when I treat people not only pain relief, but also personal and emotional changes in my patients.”
